INOVAFOODIES (“Demonstration of innovative functional food production systems based on a sustainable value chain of marine and freshwater raw materials for conscientious European consumers“) aims to provide European consumers with innovative and competitive food products derived from increasingly sustainable, reliable, and traceable aquaculture and fisheries value chains.
To achieve this ambitious goal, NOVAFOODIES brings together an international consortium of 28 partners from Europe, Israel, and China, covering the entire value chain and combining expertise in food processing and manufacturing, biosafety, legal affairs, consumer engagement, business development, information technology, and sustainability.
Over its 36-month duration, starting in May 2023, the project pursues the following key objectives:
- Increase the Technology Readiness Level (TRL) of sustainable cultivation processes and low-energy drying technologies for microalgae and macroalgae.
- Advance the TRL of innovative biorefinery processes by optimizing the extraction and separation of functional compounds from fish and algae, enabling the development of novel food prototypes.
- Develop innovative packaging solutions based on macroalgae-derived materials.
- Produce biomass from beach-cast seaweed accumulations (banquettes) for use in aquaculture feed applications.
- Develop processes to valorise by-catches by transforming underutilised marine resources into innovative food products for human consumption.
In addition, NOVAFOODIES is developing a Market Platform, integrated with a mobile application, to improve traceability and optimize the use of residual materials throughout the production chain, thereby strengthening consumer trust and supporting more sustainable food systems.
